Genetic testing and dietary advice

Recent media reports have raised concerns over a genetic testing company’s pharmacy-based weight loss program. The program involves a simple DNA collection, followed by diet and weight loss advice, based on the DNA test results.

While being able to tailor dietary advice around a person’s genetic profile is an exciting concept, the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) believes this is still some way off. The scientific evidence around genetic testing being directly linked to tailored dietary advice is not yet strong. DAA welcomes more well-designed studies in this emerging area.

DAA recommends people looking to make dietary changes to improve their health seek expert, individual dietary assessment and advice from an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD). The Association is pleased that the pharmacy-based weight loss program recently reported in the media employs APDs to provide dietary advice to customers.

However, expert advice from APDs on weight loss can be obtained without the need for expensive gene testing. And DAA would like to see more pharmacists collaborating with APDs to provide the best nutrition and dietary advice to their customers, in an easily-accessible location.
