English language proficiency

Competence in verbal, written and scientific use of the English language is essential to the practice of dietetics in Australia.

ALL dietitians who are applying for a skills assessment for the purpose of migration or an Assessment of Eligibility to Sit DAA Examinations in Dietetics must prove English Language Proficiency.

The English Language Proficiency Test is waived where applicants have met the educational requirements for English language.  See Educational requirements further down this page.

English Language Proficiency Test – OET or IELTS

You should sit the English test before you apply for assessment of eligibility to sit the DAA examinations.

There are two options:

Complete the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examination (Academic Module) and achieve a minimum score of six and a half (6.5) in each of the four components (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking) with an Overall Band Score of seven (7).

OR

Complete the Occupational English Test (OET) in Dietetics and achieve a minimum score of B in each of the four components (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking).

Please note – No other English language test is acceptable.

Currency of English Language Tests

The results of these tests are only current for two (2) years.  You must have a current English Language Test result at the time of applying for an Assessment of Eligibility to sit DAA Examinations in Dietetics and at the time of sitting the both the written and oral examinations.

Waiver of English Language Proficiency Test

The English Language Proficiency Test is waived where applicants have met the educational requirements for English language.

Educational requirements:

Completed a tertiary education program of at least four years (or equivalent) leading to a degree or post-graduate diploma in dietetics or related field in one of the following counties:-

  • United States of America
  • United Kingdom
  • New Zealand
  • Ireland
  • Canada (except Quebec).

OR

Completed an accredited dietetics degree in Australia within the two years prior to application.

If you do not meet the above criteria, you will need to successfully pass one of the two English Language Proficiency Tests listed above.

Please Note: The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) may require you to undertake an English Language Proficiency Test even where DAA has waived this requirement. Please contact DIAC for further information.
