This intermediate level course offers a very comprehensive and practical course for dietitians looking to extend their existing knowledge of paediatric dietetics in the areas of complex food allergy, gastrointestinal diseases and eating disorders.
Audience: Dietitians with paediatric dietetic experience or Dietitians with limited /no paediatric experience who have completed Paediatric Nutrition for Life.
National Paediatric Dietetic Training – Introduction to Advanced Paediatric Nutrition Areas

This advanced level course offers an opportunity to update and enhance knowledge base in specialty paediatric areas such as the ketogenic diet, metabolic medicine, parenteral nutrition, and advanced gastroenterology and hepatology.
Audience: Dietitians with 5+ years experience in paediatric nutrition or Dietitians with have limited /no paediatric experience who have completed Paediatric Nutrition for Life and Paediatric Nutrition for Disease.
There are three independent, progressive courses each building on the complexity of the previous. Each course is 2 days. Participants may take a single course or progress through all three.
Growth, nutrition assessment and calculating energy requirements for infants and children
- Describe the growth pattern of a typically developing infant and child.
- Describe the factors affecting growth.
- Use best practice techniques and tools for weighing and measuring infants and children.
- Assess and interpret growth measurements (eg weight, height/length, BMI) using appropriate reference data (CDC/WHO growth charts or other evidence-based growth charts).
- Assess and interpret other measurements using appropriate reference data (eg midarm muscle circumference) to estimate body composition.
- Estimate energy requirements using appropriate equations and standards for healthy infants, children and adolescents.
- Identify the appropriate fluid, macro and micronutrient requirements for healthy infants, children and adolescents.
- Assess and interpret the dietary intake of infants, children and adolescents for nutritional adequacy.
Infant Feeding – breastfeeding & introduction of solids
- Understand the advantages and barriers to successful breastfeeding.
- Understand the differences between the composition of breast milk and infant formula.
- Evaluate infant feeding patterns and trends
- Determine adequacy of intake for infants.
- Understand the key elements of safe storage of expressed breast milk.
- Acquire a working knowledge of the current guidelines for the introduction of solids and the reason for recent changes.
- Identify an infant/child with faltering growth and its potential causes and consequences.
- Calculate ‘catch up’ requirements and understand when they are necessary.
- Understand age appropriate dietary recommendations to meet requirements including food fortification and concentrating formulas.
- Understand the current trends nationally, statewide and locally for paediatric obesity.
- Identify the current barriers and evidence regarding paediatric obesity service development.
- Understand key messaging to families addressing the obesity issue.
- Identify and choose the appropriate tools for measurement, assessment and definition for overweight and obesity in infants and paediatrics.
- Understand the current literature relevant to paediatric obesity and contributing factors with particular focus on infant feeding.
- Acquire a working knowledge of the current clinical guidelines supporting paediatric obesity treatment.
- Understand what a systems approach to evidence-based obesity treatment looks like.
- Recognise when referral for medical or multidisciplinary management of weight is warranted, the components of the treatment and expected outcomes (as demonstrated through a case study).
Management of complex food allergies
- Describe the nutrition assessment of infants, children and adolescents with food allergies.
- Understand the management of both IgE- and non-IgE- mediated food allergy.
- Identify the challenges in meeting nutrient requirements for children with restricted diets and list practical foods substitutions.
- Demonstrate key principles of allergy assessment including an allergy focused diet history.
- Plan an adequate diet for a young person with multiple food allergies.
Management of Gastrointestinal Disorders
- Understand the diagnosis of coeliac disease and the common nutritional deficiencies associated with the condition.
- Understand the differences between primary and secondary lactose and other disaccharide intolerances.
- Understand the causes of childhood constipation and the medical and nutritional treatment approaches.
- Understand the medical and nutritional management of inflammatory bowel disease.
- Calculate micro and macro requirements of a child with inflammatory bowel disease.
- Accurately prescribe exclusive enteral nutrition for a child with Crohn’s disease.
General eating disorder knowledge
- Acquire a working knowledge of the diagnostic criteria for eating disorders.
- Understand the risk factors that contribute to the development of eating disorder.
- Understand the physical, psychological and social impacts of an eating disorder.
- Describe prevalence rates.
- Understand how to complete a biopsychosocial assessment that integrates assessment of eating disorder symptoms.
- Conduct screening of food and nutrition-related history.
- Identify the type, frequency, duration and triggers of eating disorder behaviours.
- Assess height, weight and rate of any weight changes.
- Understand and identify risk and comorbid presentations.
Intervention and recovery
- Identify the current evidence base treatments for each eating disorder diagnosis.
- Understand the role and significance of a multidisciplinary team in treatment.
- Know how & when to implement risk and medical management plans.
- Know of care levels and when to refer.
- Understand the importance of supervision as required by the DAA.
- Understand the importance of continuing professional development.
- Describe the ketogenic diet and how it works.
- Be aware of the efficacy of the diet, and to whom it benefits.
- Describe the classical ketogenic diet and its components.
- Plan for a classical ketogenic diet, including dietary calculations, recipe development, as well as the admission process.
- Describe the modified ketogenic diet and its components.
- Plan for a modified ketogenic diet, and know its advantages.
- Describe the side effects of the ketogenic diet.
- Be familiar with ongoing monitoring and trouble shooting of the ketogenic diet.
- Give appropriate advice on managing low and high ketones, hypoglycemia and illness when on the ketogenic diet.
- Devise appropriate meal and snack choices for paediatric patients on both forms of the diet.
- Understand the processes of cellular metabolism, and to understand inborn errors of metabolism and how they are inherited.
- Be familiar with the overarching principles of the nutritional management of inborn errors of metabolism.
- Understand hyperammonaemia and its consequences.
- Describe common inborn errors of metabolism, understand the goals of nutrition management of these disorders, and the monitoring required.
- Accurately count grams of dietary protein.
- Plan a low protein diet.
- Prescribe appropriate protein substitutes.
- Understand the purpose of unwell regimens in inborn errors of metabolism, to know how to plan them and when to initiate them.
Parenteral nutrition (PN)
- Identify indications and contraindications for PN in children.
- Demonstrate knowledge of physical access requirements to administer PN.
- Know the safe upper and lower limits of fluid, protein, fat, glucose administration for the infant/paediatric cohort.
- Establish micronutrients requirements including electrolytes, trace elements, vitamins and minerals.
- Demonstrate safe and effective practice in initiating PN.
- Monitor tolerance and requirements of PN in the paediatric patient.
- Identify potential complications to prevent and treat them as they occur.
- Implement cyclic PN.
- Successfully wean PN to enteral nutrition.
- Identify paediatric patients appropriate for Home PN and monitoring.
Advanced Gastroenterology and Hepatology
- Calculate micro and macro requirements of a child with liver disease.
- Describe common complications of liver disease and understand nutritional approaches to manage these.
- Understand the complexities around the nutritional management of a child with short bowel syndrome.
- Accurately describe the different types of short bowel syndrome and the nutritional management goal of each type.
- Understand the stages of bowel adaptation and outline the nutritional strategies for each stage.
- Devise appropriate meal plans for children with short bowel syndrome and liver failure.
Leave the training with:
- Up to 18 hours Continuing Professional Development (CPD) per course. APDs can enter this under ‘Professional Education’ when course content aligns with APD learning goals (and remember to tick the ‘Professional Competence’ box in your CPD entry as well if the course has developed your skills, knowledge and expertise related to your area of practice – and that’s our goal!).
- A Certificate of Attendance, or Professional Certificate for Dietitians attending Paediatric Nutrition for Disease and Introduction to Advanced Paediatric Nutrition Areas. In order to attain the relevant certificate, participants need to complete both the pre and post course work and online assessments, in addition to attending the full schedule for the module. Assessments are in the form of multiple-choice quizzes.
Associate Professor Robyn Littlewood has been a paediatric clinical dietitian for over 20 years and is currently Chief Executive Officer for the first Health Promotion agency in Queensland – Health and Wellbeing Queensland. A/Professor Littlewood was previously, Director Health Services Research and Conjoint Associate Professor of Nutrition, The University of Queensland. She also held the Director of Dietetics position at the Royal Children’s Hospital and Queensland Children’s Hospital Queensland for over 10 years. A/Professor Littlewood is a Fellow, Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) and was a previous Board Member for the DAA. Robyn has completed both a Masters of Medical Science and PhD in the area of paediatric nutrition, Graduate Certificate in Executive Leadership, and is currently completing an MBA. A/Professor Littlewood is also the Director of Child Health in Life and Disease Dietetics (ChildD) and runs a small private clinic in Brisbane.
Kathy Beck is an Accredited Practising Dietitian working in both public and private sectors in Queensland and is the recognised paediatric allergy dietitian in Queensland regularly providing lectures in paediatric food allergy to dietetic students, dietitians, general practitioners and paediatricians. Kathy’s passion is supporting families with infants and children living with food allergy to have a better quality of life when attempting to avoid allergens and adequately substitute to achieve a nutritionally adequate intake. Kathy is the Chair of the Dietitian Committee of the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunologists and Allergists (ASCIA) which aims to provide up-to-date educational resources for dietitians and families living with food allergy.
Dr Kim Hurst is a Senior Psychologist and Clinical Lead of the Robina Private Hospital Eating Disorders Service. She has been specialising in the treatment of eating disorders for over thirteen years and has worked across a range of treatment settings including psychiatric and medical inpatient units and outpatient services. Dr Hurst has a solid record of presenting at several local, national and international eating disorder conferences and has several published works within the field. Dr Hurst is currently the president of the Australian & New Zealand Academy for Eating Disorders (ANZAED).
Julia Fox has been a clinical paediatric dietitian for over 15 years and is currently the Clinical Leader of Dietetic Services at a tertiary hospital in Queensland. Julia is a recognised leader in the dietetic management of children on parenteral nutrition (PN) and of children with complex gastrointestinal disorders, including inflammatory bowel disease and liver failure, and has presented at national and international scientific meetings on these areas. Julia has utilised her skills to advocate for and achieve formal improvements in service delivery, particularly in the area of PN. Julia is on council for Australasian Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (AuSPEN) and recently established and chairs the Paediatric Committee for AuSPEN.
Catherine Bonifant has been a clinical paediatric dietitian for 20 years, and in addition to private consultant work, is currently the Clinical Leader of Dietetic Services for Medical services at a large tertiary hospital in Queensland. Catherine is a recognised leader in the clinical dietetic management of inborn errors of metabolism, and the nutritional management of respiratory disorders, including cystic fibrosis, and has presented at national and international scientific meetings on these areas. Additionally, Catherine has authored book chapters, journal articles and conference abstracts on these topics. Catherine also has a special interest in infant nutrition. Catherine is an Accredited Practising Dietitian.
Ayala Rogany has been a clinical paediatric dietitian since 2006 and is currently a clinical educator dietitian in a major tertiary children’s hospital in Brisbane. Ayala is an Accredited Practising Dietitian, and throughout her professional career has provided upskilling, mentoring and education for student and new graduate dietitians, including university lectures to a number of dietetics courses within South East Queensland. Ayala has experience in a number of paediatric clinical areas including oncology, palliative care, paediatric intensive care, general outpatients, rehabilitation, acute baby ward, and nutrition support. In addition to clinical work, Ayala also has experience in statewide project work and service redesign.
