If I have high cholesterol, can I eat foods with cholesterol?

It was once thought that eating foods high in cholesterol caused high blood cholesterol levels. We now know that eating foods high in saturated fat is a bigger risk than the level of cholesterol in foods.

To keep your cholesterol down you should limit foods high in saturated fats such as:

  • Fatty take-away meals
  • Cakes, biscuits and pastries
  • Butter, cream and icecream
  • Fatty meats

Foods that have cholesterol in them like eggs and prawns can be enjoyed as part of a healthy diet.

An Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) can provide tailored dietary advice for people with high cholesterol or a family history of high cholesterol.
